How to measure your wall for a Mural
How to Measure Your Wall for a Mural
Accurate measurements are essential when ordering a made-to-measure mural. Walls are rarely perfectly square. Ceilings can slope, skirting boards can be uneven, and the width or height of a wall can vary from one side to another.
For this reason, always measure your wall in several places, use the largest measurements, and then add our recommended 2.5 cm allowance to every outer side of the mural.
This additional material gives your installer enough room to position the mural correctly and trim the outer edges for a clean, professional finish.
What You Will Need
You will need:
• A metal tape measure
• A pencil and paper, or your phone, to record the measurements
• A second person to help with particularly wide or high walls
Always record your measurements in the same unit — either centimetres or inches — and double-check them before placing your order.

Step 1 — Measure the Maximum Width
Measure the full width of the area you would like the mural to cover.
Take three separate measurements:
• Across the top
• Across the middle
• Across the bottom
Do not assume that all three measurements will be identical. Use the largest width as your wall measurement.
Example:
Top: 424 cm
Middle: 426 cm
Bottom: 423 cm
Your maximum wall width is therefore 426 cm.
Step 2 — Measure the Maximum Height
Measure from the bottom of the wall to the ceiling at several points.
We recommend measuring at least:
• The left side
• The centre
• The right side
Again, use the largest measurement.
Example:
Left: 279 cm
Centre: 281 cm
Right: 278 cm
Your maximum wall height is therefore 281 cm.
Step 3 — Add 2.5 cm to Every Side
Once you have established the maximum width and maximum height, add an installation allowance of 2.5 cm to each outer side of the mural.
This means:
Width: 2.5 cm left + 2.5 cm right = 5 cm additional width
Height: 2.5 cm top + 2.5 cm bottom = 5 cm additional height
Using our example:
Maximum wall width: 426 cm
-
2.5 cm left
-
2.5 cm right
= 431 cm mural width
Maximum wall height: 281 cm
-
2.5 cm top
-
2.5 cm bottom
= 286 cm mural height
Your Mural Size to Order: 431 cm W × 286 cm H

The additional material is intentional. Once your mural has been installed and all panels are correctly aligned, the excess around the outer perimeter can be carefully trimmed to follow the actual ceiling, skirting board and wall edges.
Doors, Windows and Other Openings
If your mural wall contains a door, window or other opening, do not subtract it from the overall dimensions.
Measure the complete wall as though the opening were not there. This allows the artwork to remain continuous and ensures that the mural panels can be correctly aligned during installation.
The mural can then be carefully trimmed around doors, windows, switches and other features during installation.
If your design contains an important focal element, we recommend noting the position of doors and windows so that we can consider their placement within the artwork where appropriate.
Sloped or Uneven Walls
For sloped ceilings, angled walls or irregular spaces, measure the widest and tallest points of the entire area.
Take several measurements across the wall rather than relying on a single height or width.
Imagine a rectangle large enough to contain the entire area you want covered. Your mural should be ordered to cover this complete rectangle, including the 2.5 cm allowance on each outer side.
The excess can then be trimmed during installation to follow the actual shape of the wall.
For particularly unusual walls, please contact us with your measurements and a photograph or simple drawing of the space before ordering.
Measuring a Specific Area Rather Than the Entire Wall
Your mural does not have to cover an entire wall.
If you would like the mural to sit within a particular area — for example, above a console, behind a bed or within architectural mouldings — measure the exact area you want the artwork to occupy.
We recommend marking the intended boundaries lightly with painter's tape first so that you can step back and assess the proportions.
Once you are happy with the area, take several width and height measurements, use the largest dimensions and add the required installation allowance.
Measure Twice Before Ordering
Before submitting your mural dimensions, measure everything again.
Check that:
• You have used the largest width measurement
• You have used the largest height measurement
• You have added 2.5 cm to the left and right
• You have added 2.5 cm to the top and bottom
• All measurements are recorded in the same unit
• Doors and windows have not been deducted from a full-wall mural
Your Dami & Em Design mural is made specifically to the dimensions you provide, so taking a few extra minutes to check your measurements is important.
Remember
Measure the maximum wall width and height first. Then add 2.5 cm to each of the four outer sides.
Example:
Wall: 426 cm W × 281 cm H
Mural size to order: 431 cm W × 286 cm H
Your mural panels will be supplied professionally trimmed along their joining edges for a straight, edge-to-edge match.
The additional allowance applies only to the outer perimeter of the complete mural, not to the joins between individual panels.
Once the mural is fully installed and correctly aligned, trim the excess material at the ceiling, skirting board and outer wall edges for a beautifully fitted finish.
